AXON: The Community AI Network That Thinks Together | Antonio Pedoto

Imagine being able to use artificial intelligence as powerful as ChatGPT or Claude, completely free, without subscriptions, without giving your data to any American big tech company. Imagine that your PC, when you're not using it, contributes to making all this possible. This isn't science fiction: it's called AXON.

The Problem Nobody Wants to Address

There's an elephant in the artificial intelligence room. To use the best AI models today, you need to pay between €18 and €30 per month. For an individual, it's a luxury. For a small Italian business, multiplied by each employee, it becomes unsustainable. For a school or non-profit organization? Forget it.

But it gets worse. Every time you write a query to ChatGPT, your data travels to American servers. Every question, every document, every creative idea you submit to AI ends up in data centers controlled by foreign companies. For a company handling sensitive data, this is a compliance issue. For a European citizen, it's a matter of digital sovereignty.

And meanwhile, as I write these lines, billions of PCs worldwide are doing... nothing. Your home computer is on, but it's probably using less than 5% of its power. Corporate servers sleep at night. Office workstations remain unused for 16 hours a day. It's a colossal waste.

AXON: How It Works

AXON (AI Exchange Open Network) completely flips the paradigm. Instead of paying a subscription to OpenAI, you contribute the computational power you already own but don't use. In return, you receive credits that allow you to use AI for free.

The principle is simple: give power when you're not using it, receive unlimited AI when you need it.

If you're familiar with P2P networks from the 2000s — eMule, BitTorrent, Gnutella — the concept will sound familiar. Except instead of sharing files, nodes share AI inference. Each participant locally runs a language model (LLM) via Ollama, and when a request comes from the network, they process it and return the response.

The Architecture in Detail

The AXON network consists of four fundamental elements:

Contributor Node: the heart of the system. A PC or server running an LLM model (Llama, Mistral, Phi, Gemma) that processes queries for the network. Installation happens with a single command: the script automatically detects the operating system, verifies hardware requirements, installs Docker if necessary, and configures everything.

Router/Orchestrator: selects the optimal node for each request, balancing quality, latency, and availability. There's no central server: routing logic is distributed.

Registry: a distributed catalog of all active nodes, implemented on Redis for fast access.

QoS Monitor: the system that measures and certifies each node's quality, assigning scores that determine priority and rewards.

The Quality System That Makes the Difference

Not all nodes are equal. A PC with an RTX 4090 GPU responds in milliseconds; an old laptop takes seconds. AXON manages this heterogeneity with a sophisticated Quality of Service system.

Each node is evaluated on four metrics: Response Latency (25%): how quickly it generates tokens Uptime (25%): percentage of time online in the last 24 hours Output Quality (30%): automatic periodic benchmarks with verified responses Hardware (20%): RAM, GPU, CPU verified at onboarding

The composite score (0-100) determines the node's tier:

Tier Score Benefits --- --- --- A 85-100 Maximum priority, credit multiplier x1.5, Gold badge B 60-84 Normal traffic, access to all models C 40-59 Reduced traffic, base models only Excluded 72 hours): +100 one-time credits

User Levels:

Level Credits Queries/day Extra --- --- --- --- Seed 0-100 50 Base models Root 100-500 200 Advanced models Tree 500-2,000 Unlimited Queue priority Forest 2,000+ Unlimited Governance vote + badge

Gamification isn't an end in itself: rankings, badges, and levels motivate contributors and create an active community.

Who Is AXON For

Individuals and Hobbyists Unlimited free AI without subscriptions. Your PC contributes at night, during the day you use accumulated credits. Total privacy: your queries never leave the community network.

Small Italian Businesses Zero API costs. No OpenAI or Anthropic invoices. Company data stays in Italy, native GDPR compliance. The API is OpenAI-compatible: just change the endpoint, the code stays identical.

Developers Open source REST API, drop-in replacement for OpenAI. Unlimited free sandbox for testing. Free model choice: Llama, Mistral, Phi, Gemma. Ability to manage specialized nodes (e.g., code-only or language-specific).

Schools and Non-profits Completely free educational AI. No sensitive data from minors leaves the institution. European digital sovereignty: no dependence on foreign big tech.

The Roadmap

The project develops in four phases:

Phase 1 — Proof of Concept (Months 1-2) Base node agent with Ollama, simple centralized router, basic QoS system, multiplatform installer, public GitHub repository.

Phase 2 — Quality and Community (Months 2-4) Automatic benchmark, multi-metric score, web dashboard for contributors, invitation system, automatic LAN discovery.

Phase 3 — Decentralization (Months 4-7) DHT for WAN discovery, distributed router, peer-to-peer validators, distributed RAG knowledge base, auto-update nodes.

Phase 4 — Ecosystem (Months 7-12+) Stable public API, domain-specialized nodes, community governance, partner program for institutions and schools.

Security and Privacy by Design

AXON is built with security as a founding principle: TLS 1.3 encrypted communications between all nodes Models run locally: queries never leave the processing node Cryptographically signed credits to prevent manipulation Docker containers with minimal permissions (principle of least privilege) Reputation system making malicious behavior economically disadvantageous GDPR compliance by design: no personal data required to participate

Why AXON, Why Now

We're at a crossroads. Artificial intelligence is becoming critical infrastructure like electricity or the internet. But unlike these, it's completely controlled by a few American companies. Europe is a consumer, not a producer. We pay, we depend, we don't control.

AXON is a concrete answer. As Wikipedia democratized knowledge, as Linux democratized the operating system, AXON wants to democratize AI. Make it accessible to everyone, controlled by everyone, built by everyone.

The power to do this already exists. It's distributed across millions of PCs worldwide waiting to be connected.

AXON — The community AI network that thinks together.
